ONLINE LIBRARY CATALOG

The library’s online catalog is accessible from the Library Home Page:  http://dept.seattlecolleges.com/sslib

Click on Catalog. You'll come directly into Basic Search. Select the field that you want the computer to search and type in your search terms.  You can do Title, Keyword Relevance, Author, or Subject searches.  You must use Library of Congress subject headings, the authorized “standard” vocabulary for searching the Subject field.

You’ll find the book’s location and call number in the library catalog. When you find a relevant book on the library shelves, always look at the books next to it to see if there are other books about your topic nearby. Books in the library are arranged according to subject.

If you would like to borrow a book from another campus, you can place a hold by clicking on Request Item. It takes 48 - 72 hours (2 - 3 working days) for a book to be sent to South Campus. Check the Hold Request list at the Check-In/Check-Out desk to find out if your book has arrived.

CHECKING OUT BOOKS

You’ll need show your student ID card to check out a book. Please bring it with you! You can check out books for 2 weeks; magazines can be checked out for 1 week at a time. Media materials must be used in the library.

7 Tips for searching

1.  Think carefully about how to describe your topic. Use broader terms, narrower terms, synonyms and related words.

2.  Use a plus (+) in front of each required search term: +muslim +women

3. Use quote marks (" ") around a phrase:                     "health care”

4. Use a minus (-) to exclude a term from your search. The search below leaves out web pages about the astrological sign, Cancer:

+cancer –astrology

5.  If your results aren't satisfactory, try another strategy.

6. Read the Help or Search Tips for a particular search engine or database. Each search engine is different, and there may be helpful hints for more effective searching.

7. Try using more than one search tool to find information. Use encyclopedias, the online library catalog, databases, search engines and directories! Different search tools yield different results.
